Reserve Beach Accomodations in Mexico

Going Down to Rocky Point?

Reservations are recommended! The last thing you want do do is drive all the way down to Mexico and find out that you have to sleep on the beach! (Sleeping on the beach is not recommended. I have a friend who did it and she almost got run over by dune buggies.) What you want is a nice place with an oceanfront view that is within walking distance to the watering holes and other points of interest. (Your points of interest may vary.) Getting the right hotel ahead of time also ensures that you won't be hit with "walk in" rates that could be two or three times what you would have paid if you booked in advance. Lots of people get vacation and condo rentals in Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco as the locals call it) but hotels are a better bet because (1) you probably don't want a timeshare, no matter what the pretty lady with free para-sailing tickets says, and (2) condos can often be questionable. Many of Rocky Point's hotels, on the other hand, are highly rated in travel guides, and serve clientele who are looking for a good time. Lots of them have better security than you would get on your own, and if you're going to Mexico you should know that bringing your own security is not allowed.

Where should you stay? Locals recommend the Hotel Plaza Penasco, the Penasco del Sol, and the Paraiso del Desierto. Seasoned travelers go to the Playa Inn, Maya Palace Regency, and Las Palomas Beach and Golf Resort, which faces the Sea of Cortez.
